Halloween in the Computer Lab
Week of October 1, 2018
Materials:
Scope and Sequence:
Content Standard 2: “A student who has been educated in library media information skills evaluates information critically and competently.” (Page 7, Dearborn Public Schools Department of Media Services, K-12 Information Literacy Library Media Curriculum,” June 2004)
Objective and Purpose:
- Students will evaluate Easy books based on pictures, theme, and characters.
Anticipatory Set:
- Review last week’s Key Word: “Spine Label.”
- Introduce the week’s Key Word, Holiday
- Review where the Holiday Section is and the sticker on the spine of Halloween books.
Input:
- Show the cover of each book. Indicate elements of print, the author and illustrator.
Lesson:
- Review rules for the computer lab from 2 weeks ago (see http://iblog.dearbornschools.org/harrisc1/2015/09/12/rules-for-the-computer-lab/) for a list of classes and rules generated by students
- Read “Autumn Woods” from Ring Out Wild Bells. Point out the words that rhyme.
- Read “The Hallo-wiener.”
- Show “Space Case” and use the illustrations to predict what will happen next. (Video version of the book available through BookFlix, http://bkflix.grolier.com/sw/node-33982/bk0067pr) I have a copy in my Amazon instant video account.)
- If there’s time, read “A Dark, Dark Tale” and be sure to scare the kids on the final page (read quietly and calmly until you reach “a mouse!” and shout that part. What makes something scary?
