Materials:

Scope and Sequence:

Content Standard 2: “A student who has been educated in library media information skills evaluates information critically and competently.” (Page 7, Dearborn Public Schools Department of Media Services, K-12 Information Literacy Library Media Curriculum,” June 2004)

Objective and Purpose:

  • Students will evaluate Easy books based on pictures, theme, and characters.

Anticipatory Set:

  • Review last week’s Key Word: “Spine Label.”
  • Introduce the week’s Key Word, Holiday
  • Review where the Holiday Section is and the sticker on the spine of Halloween books.

Input:

  • Show the cover of each book. Indicate elements of print, the author and illustrator.

  • Tell students we will read more books about Halloween next week.

Objective and Purpose:

Students will evaluate Easy books based on pictures, theme, and characters.

Key Vocabulary:

Halloween and Holiday Section.

Anticipatory Set:

Introduce this week’s vocabulary: “Halloween” and “Holiday Section.” Review where the Holiday Section is in the media center and where to find the sticker on the spine of Halloween books.

Input:

Show the cover of each book. Indicate elements of print, the author and illustrator.

Lesson:

  • Read “In a dark, dark tale” and be sure to scare the kids on the final page (read quietly and calmly until you reach “a mouse!” and shout that part. What makes something scary?
  • Read “Space Case” and use illustrations to predict what will happen next.
  • Read “The Hallo-weiner” to practice making predictions using illustrations.
